Baran could not believe his good fortune. An hour after they had left the Island Clipper, with four strong sailors as his crew, their awkward, barge-like raft had reached the landing craft, LSM-60, identified by heavy cabling that held the bomb, which was dangling somewhere below in the murkiness. As early as they had arrived in the darkness, they were hoping to find the site deserted and it was, yet bright with working lights, running on batteries, attached to the landing craft railings and pointing down into the water’s deep blue. They could not see the bomb; one of the crew would have to be deployed as the helmeted diver.

Baran set his men to work and at the same time answered the cautious fear of his crew about the silence within the lagoon.

“They are not expecting anyone. And they are Americans. They come to work at proper capitalist office times.” To himself, he was somewhat disappointed, for he had hoped they had not yet lowered the bomb into place since there were still two days to go before the planned explosion. If that had been the case, they would have come back the next night and tried to cut the cables and disarm the radio activator on the detonator. What he could see, or rather could not see, was the bomb somewhere beneath the water. His Plan B was not too much of a concern. He would use, with the cables cut from the landing craft, the sea to tug-drift the bomb out of the lagoon to the plane, and there, if they could not load it easily, sink the bomb in a hidden location until the Soviet intelligence trawler, whence he had gained his crew, could make rendezvous to retrieve the prize. Baran, confident, would adapt to make his plan work, and tomorrow night steal America’s atomic bomb. All would be apparent when they showed up at the plane with their ‘souvenir’.

Baran could care less about retrieving the statue for the Red Tiki Lounge. From this moment on, he would be in charge, not this weak Japanese girl.

First things first: the bomb.

“Let’s get down there,” he commanded. A tarp was pulled back to reveal the diving gear, one crate of dynamite with waterproofed electrical timer, and several military grade M-1s with ammunition. Baran came prepared for any eventuality and no one was going to stop him.
